FNB HTML5 Game

While working for That’s It Communications (now Prodigious Africa), we created a stand for First National Bank at the South African Banking Expo of 2015.

The main attraction was a 55″ Microsoft Surface Hub where visitors were supposed to play a game to teach them about… well, debt consolidation of all things!

Solution

We had very limited time. Fortunately by the time I learned about the project, the artwork was pretty much done. But I had to find a way to bring an interactive game to life.

Our game had many assets, multiple levels, diminishing lives, collectables and a points system. I looked at some Javascript libraries, and came across a simple 2D runner game from the Quintus library, which I could use as a template to work from. The example is still available here.

Fortunately the library’s documentation was pretty good and I managed to get the game done with time to spare, so we could test it out on the Microsoft Surface before installing it at the stand.

I couldn’t have done this without the great work of Lola van Zyl and Craig Martin for the design and animations. We launched on time, and the stand won an award as well.

You can check out a video of the gameplay below.
